When Nicholas Hooper, composer for fifth and sixth Harry Potter films, was set the task to write music for Dumbledore's death, he decided to look back upon the music of mourning from hundreds of years ago. The piece he produced is not only beautifully simple, but also uses a bass line that links composers and musicians across hundreds of years - from Monteverdi to Bach, to The Beatles to Radiohead. Let's find out what ties them all together.

Why Spider-Man has the Best Marvel Score

Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man was ground-breaking in many respects - in approach, aesthetic, narrative and cinematography. But, for me, of the most enduring gift that the film gave us was the score, written by Danny Elfman. Elfman's music for Spider-Man contains some of the greatest themes ever composed for film, but it also plays a significant role as part of the narrative. ▶ Support my channel:...

Why Jurassic Park's Music is So Powerful
Переглядів 394 тис.2 роки тому
John William's score for Jurassic Park contains some of the most iconic themes ever written for film. But although the music by itself is deeply affecting, the real power comes through the complex relationships we make with the music when it's paired with Spielberg's visuals. In this essay, I consider why the music for Jurassic Park is so powerful, and why it has stayed with us all of these yea...
What's the Colour of Music? Messiaen and Colour
Переглядів 49 тис.2 роки тому
Many composers over the years have claimed to experience synaesthesia, a condition where one sense is activated by experiencing another, and for music, this normally means that when someone hears sounds, they see colours. Scriabin, Liszt and Ligeti are some well-known examples of synesthetes, but among these composers, there is only one who truly dedicated his life to exploring the colours of m...

1917 - How Music Propels The Story
Переглядів 37 тис.3 роки тому
The score for Sam Mendes' 1917, by composer Thomas Newman, plays one of the most significant roles in storytelling in the film, partly due to the way the music is used, but more importantly because of the nature of the film's construction. By building 1917 around a single, un-broken shot, it brings the music into even greater focus, creating an even stronger link between story and music, propel...
What links ‘The Great Wave’ and Debussy’s ‘La Mer’?

But why did Claude Debussy use a version of it on the front cover of the his orchestral masterpiece, 'La Mer'? I stopped going to movies ages ago mostly because of shitty comic book hero action crap. the worst bond is this new guy that looks like Putin. I think "The Movies" were trying to soften the blow for when the damned old tramp gave the USA to Putin for Malania's wedding gift. england should stay out of other countries affairs. dump bibi and the tramp for world peace!

Underrated piece of music in the dead marshes with that menacing violin and the whispers behind it and then the forbidden pool with this combination of relaxing but otherwordly/sad/dark feeling. I think these themes that appear only once and are usually overlooked but give the darkest moments in the films are brilliant.

I don't know I like John Barry's incidental music that the orchestra played behind the action not some stupid inspid piece of pop writen for a pop star to further promote their careers. I knew I liked Mr Barry's writing when I was 6 watching my 1st Bond film in 1966. It's interesting that you mention the ∆-9 chord because all the harmonies that belong to that nondiatonic mode from every degree is a fundamental basis for modern Jazz Harmony From Wayne Shorter early 60s to Kenny Wheeler and well all of us

When I saw an AMV with that song that featured a cat and her owner, of which it screened at a convention, it made me shed tears that I was trying to fight back because I had lost my cat to death years ago and I didn't want other people to see me shed tears. I voted for the video, and to my bittersweet joy, it won.

Stravinsky did defy racist laws in South Africa (playing for a black audience) and insisted on playing for humans. He was probably racist around writing petroychka but by the 1960s he seemed to have changed for the better

I am someone who discovered "modern classical music" through hearing Pierrot Luniare by Schönberg and I can "sing" some of the songs too! I also enjoy Berio, Harrison Birtwhistle and our local university when I was growing up had a Contemporary Music Festival every year so I heard a lot of music. I also love, it was a later love, minimalism, playing over and over again a recording of "It's Gonna Rain" by Reich, plus the operas of Glass and John Adams. Reich is interested in rhythm and Schönberg was interested in Harmony Both interesting but different.

You forgot to mention that Kubrick distorted Avventures, without Ligeti's consent, who sued (successfully, by all accounts, and probably was given a hefty sum) but there didn't seem to be any bad blood, as Ligeti's music was used also in Eyes Wide Shut much later.
